Preparing for your newborn session
Tip 1
Packing you bag
Food!! Looking beautiful is tough work and newborns will eat more at their session than they would during the same span of time at home! If you are breastfeeding be sure that you have a big healthy breakfast for yourself so your milk is nice and filling! Even if you aren’t breastfeeding take some time for yourself and eat a nice breakfast! If you are bottle feeding bring extra bottles and formula!
While pacifiers are used only as a last resort, go ahead and pack a few as many babies feel the need to suck while being posed! It can mean the difference between calm relaxed baby and a awake fussy baby!
Tip 2
Personal Items
I provide all the props and newborn clothing for your session, but you are welcome to bring an item from home that is special to you. Let me know ahead of time what you are bringing so I can prepare a special set for it!
For sports related items I have a few items for the Cowboys, Texas AM, UT and OU. If you are looking for a jersey from a specific team that is not listed above you are welcome to purchase from here: http://www.theknittingbitty.com/product/little-football-jersey-shorts-set
Tip 3
Props
All the props you see in my pictures belong to me and are available for your newborn session. Take a look through my blog and Facebook page prior to your session to see if there are any props or sets you would like to request for your baby. You are welcome to email me what you would like or you can show me at the session!
Tip 4
Siblings
Most siblings over the age of 4 do just fine! Under 4 can be hit or miss. Take an honest look at your child AFTER the baby has been born and decide if attempting siblings photos is something you want to risk your sanity for! In many cases the older sibling will not go near the new baby. When this happens I can take a photos of each child and do my photoshop magic to combine them into one photo. Keep clothing simple and fitted!
Tip 5
When do we shoot?
My favorite time to do newborn sessions is between 10 and 18 days. Every photographer will have a different “sweet spot” when it comes to this. I’ve found by around 14 days breastfed babies have a better feel for feeding them selves quickly and efficiently resulting in a more relaxed session for everyone! They’ve also had time to put just a little bit of weight back on and we all love sweet baby rolls!
But what if your baby is already born? That’s ok too! Maybe your baby spent some time in the NICU or life just got in the way! That’s not a problem! After 21 days I do not expect babies to sleep through the session. At this point I call these infant sessions. Our expectation for these babies are slightly different than our expectations for 10 day olds. With awake babies we will pose them in all sorts of beautiful sets. The moms and I have jokingly (lovingly!) called these dress up sessions because we have so much fun picking out sets
Tip 6
Family/Parent Photos
We have a number of options when it comes to this! Lets face it, you are just a few days out from one of the most exhausting events in your life. I tend to keep parent photos at newborn sessions simple and to the point. I suggest wearing solid colors like deep jewel tones! Keeping it simple so the focus is on your new family.
We do have the option to do more if requested. Motherhood session a few weeks after the newborn shoot (when you are feeling a little more rested) are a great way to commemorate this exciting time in your life! Also, Lifestyle sessions in your home are offered at a discount if added on to an in-studio newborn package.
